Atzara

Atzara

Perhaps its distance from the sea has put Atzara, in the mountains of Barbagia, on the fringe of the tourist blossoming that Sardinia has seen in recent years. This is not to say that the village lacks an historical heritage: in fact, it has been included in the list of borghi più belli d’Italia (the most beautiful villages in Italy).

Among the most interesting places, there is the Church of San Giorgio in full Romanesque style from the 13th century, with its façade entirely in stone slabs. Next is the Church of Sant'Antioco, whose rose window with stone rays, made in accordance with Catalan-Gothic influences, recalls the Aragonese domination of the island. Not to be missed is the Antonio Ortiz Echagüe Museum, where Spanish-style folk costumes are preserved.
