Archaeological site of Tharros

cosa fare in Sardegna - Tharros

The archaeological site of Tharros is located in the municipality of Cabras, at the far end of the Gulf of Oristano. Initially founded as a Phoenician city in 700 B.C., it eventually became an important maritime and commercial centre under the Romans. Eventually, after much looting by the Arabs, the city was abandoned.

Among the remains, two columns of a Roman temple give the area an atmosphere halfway between desolation and the vivid colours of the sea. For a full view of the ancient city as well as of the sea of the Gulf of Oristano, you can visit the nearby Tower of San Giovanni. In addition to the archaeological area, the Sinis peninsula where it is located has a varied natural and tourist offer (such as the lighthouse of Capo San Marco).
